Day Two

The second day kicked off steadily with a meditation session conducted by Edgar where both, voice and music were used. This was followed by a showcase of Edgar’s customised handmade tools that he uses for his bamboo products. He explained the importance of crafting ones own tools depending on its end use as well as the individuals grip and style.

Meanwhile, the students also laid out products from their findings which would eventually take shape into their personal bamboo tools! These included scissors, files, and screwdrivers.

With the faculties and master craftsmen by their side, the students started off with using a stand grinder to sharpen their tools slowly and steadily. They learnt how the metal needs to be constantly cooled in the process.

A piece of dried bamboo shoot was provided which needed to be split in half and chiseled to house the grip end of the tools which was again joined after achieving a perfect fit using an epoxy adhesive. Students had the liberty to experiment with various grip styles which just added to the learning aspect even more.

Pravinsinh shared with the students the importance of combining form and function in their products as designers. With great guidance, everyone was able to produce at least one tool of their own while some had even more! The day was closed by Edgar’s classic three claps and a stamp as a show of appreciation for the efforts put in by the students; while they surely cannot wait for amazing things the next day holds.
